This project was for our 4th and 5th grade program. The theme this year was the winter olympics so every student was assigned a country in the winter olympics. Their goal: create a flag representing your country by cutting and pasting paper into a paper mosaic. Last step was to draw any detailed areas on his or her flag and glue on top of the mosaic background. We really concentrated on learning about visual symbols in art...and everyday life. The kids were challenged to "stump" me and bring in a visual symbol that I could not guess what it stood for. A 5th grader, Isabella, stumped me with a very simple visual symbol for Ashley's furniture (was a orange A). Enrichment was to create his or her own visual symbol-what would you draw that would represent yourself!?!?!
